Favorite Berkeley Memory

November 1957 — Cal Crew Alumni Day. Only ten weeks after going out for Freshman Crew, I found myself the 17‑year‑old coxswain of a racing shell that included three Olympic Gold Medal winners. It's the closest I ever got to Olympic glory. What a day!

Favorite Professor

I think his name was Professor White. He taught Physics 10, a class for liberal arts majors with no math skills. His teaching was clear, succinct, and entertaining. I still remember the principles he taught — which is more than I can say for most of the other classes.

Most Cherished Accomplishment

Aside from marrying Ellen 60 years ago and parenting two incredible children, it was writing the Thanksgiving episode of “The Bob Newhart Show,” which eventually came to be known as the “infamous moo goo gai pan” episode. Some years back, TV Guide actually named it one of the ten best TV episodes of all time.

What I'm Doing Now

While I was still doing television and a couple of movie scripts, I took up playwriting. Over the years my short comedies have been presented in over 700 venues in 33 countries.
